Good to know
An estimate from your own numbers, not tax advice. The math is plain arithmetic — tax is the price times your rate; the reverse divides the total by one plus your rate. It's not a filing tool and it doesn't assume a jurisdiction: always confirm the correct rate and taxability for where the sale happens and what you're selling.
How the sales tax math works
No black box — it's plain arithmetic on the numbers you enter:
- Add tax — tax = subtotal × rate, and grand total = subtotal + tax.
- With a discount — the discount comes off first, so tax is charged on the discounted subtotal, not the list price.
- Extract (reverse) — from a tax-included total, pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate), and the tax is what's left over.
A quick example: a $100 subtotal at a 6% rate adds $6 of sales tax for a $106 total. Working backwards, a $106 tax-included price at 6% breaks down to $100 of revenue you keep and $6 of tax you pass through to the state. The sales tax you collect isn't income — it's money you hold and remit.
